The Nassau County Department of Health has issued a warning of potential measles exposure at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The exposure occurred in the Emergency Department waiting room and treatment area on March 20 and March 21.
According to officials, patients who visited the medical center during this time frame are being contacted, particularly those considered to be at high risk. Northwell Health has confirmed that a patient with measles was isolated, admitted, and is currently in stable condition.
The child, who is under 5 years old, was admitted on Thursday and has since been discharged. This marks the third case of measles reported in Nassau County in 2019.
Measles is a highly contagious viral respiratory illness that can spread easily among unvaccinated individuals. It is important for those who may have been exposed to monitor themselves for symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, and rash.
Health officials are urging anyone who believes they may have been exposed to contact their healthcare provider immediately. Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles and protect against potential outbreaks.
The Department of Health is working closely with Northwell Health to ensure that all necessary precautions are being taken to prevent further spread of the virus. Anyone with concerns or questions about measles or vaccination is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or the Nassau County Department of Health.
