Mysterious Respiratory Illness Affects Dogs Across the US
Researchers at the New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and the University of New Hampshire are working diligently to uncover the cause of a puzzling respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs not only in New Hampshire but also in several other states across the country.
Veterinary pathologists conducted extensive investigations by collecting tissue samples from infected dogs. However, to their surprise, no known viruses, bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens commonly associated with respiratory illnesses in dogs were found. This has led the researchers to believe that they are dealing with a new and previously undescribed bacterium.
Upon further analysis, a close relative of a bacteria called Mycoplasma was found in some of the samples. Although the testing is still ongoing, samples from dogs in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Oregon, Colorado, and Illinois have also been included to determine the extent of the outbreak.
The illness exhibits symptoms such as persistent coughing, sneezing, and goopy eyes, with a longer duration compared to other respiratory conditions in dogs. Unfortunately, treatment options for this illness are limited, and it appears to be resistant to most anti-inflammatory medications.
However, there is some good news. There is no evidence to suggest that this pathogen can infect humans, and the illness is typically not fatal for dogs. Thus, pet owners can take solace in knowing that their own health is not at risk.
It is still unclear whether all the cases of respiratory illness in dogs across the country are related, but researchers believe it to be a syndrome rather than a single bacterium causing the outbreak. This makes it essential for dog owners to stay updated on local outbreak information and take necessary precautions to protect their beloved pets.
Similarities have been noticed by researchers between the precautions necessary to limit the spread of COVID-19 in humans and safeguarding dogs from this respiratory illness. Like humans, dogs require social distancing when interacting with others, along with ensuring they are up to date on vaccinations.
While researchers continue their investigations, dog owners should remain vigilant, protect their pets, and follow the necessary guidelines to keep their furry companions safe and healthy.
