Saudi Arabia to Host Summit on Ukrainian President’s Peace Formula for Ukraine
Saudi Arabia is preparing to host a summit to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 10-point peace formula for Ukraine. The summit, which will bring together officials from numerous countries, is scheduled to take place on August 5 and 6 in the city of Jeddah, with approximately 30 countries expected to participate.
The primary focus of the discussions will be on the Ukrainian Peace Formula, which aims to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity and ultimately bring an end to the ongoing Russian invasion. Key components of the peace plan include the withdrawal of Russian troops, the release of all prisoners, the establishment of a tribunal to hold those responsible for the aggression accountable, and providing crucial security guarantees for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian peace plan has been actively under discussion with representatives from more than 50 countries on a weekly basis. In June, a preliminary gathering was held in Copenhagen, which saw the participation of important countries such as Brazil, India, Turkey, and South Africa.
The list of invitees to the Jeddah summit is considerably diverse and includes notable countries such as Chile, Egypt, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zambia. Regrettably, Russia has not been invited.
The summit serves multiple purposes, one being to raise the profile of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and promote a dรฉtente with Iran. Additionally, it aims to address the ongoing war in Yemen, an issue of grave concern in the region.
In parallel with the summit, Ukraine will commence talks with the United States regarding a bilateral agreement for security guarantees. This development follows the recent declaration made by the Group of 7 nations earlier this month, which expressed solidarity with Ukraine and emphasized the need to protect its sovereignty.
While other peace plans, including those proposed by Russia, China, and Pope Francis, have also been discussed, no specific details have been released regarding their content. Nevertheless, the upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia holds substantial promise for progress in resolving the crisis in Ukraine and restoring peace in the region.
