President Donald Trump is prepared to address the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) tomorrow to talk about his ‘America First’ agenda. This talk will happen a day following a crucial flip-flop regarding gun control that has angered his conservative base.
Previously an ardent supporter of firearm freedom, Trump has done a reversal following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida last week that claimed 17 lives. Under the pressure, he is now endorsing increased restrictions to infringe upon the 2nd Amendment.
“I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue – I hope!” Trump wrote in a tweet this morning.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) have supported Trump ardently throughout his run for the Presidency, being one of the first organizations to endorse him. The organization’s president, Wayne LaPierre doubled-down on his opposition to gun control during his CPAC speech on Thursday.
“As usual, the opportunists waited not one second to exploit tragedy for political gain,” LaPierre said to an audience in National Harbor, MD. “Chris Murphy, Nancy Pelosi, and more, cheered on by the national media, eager to blame the NRA and call for more government control.”
“They don’t care if their laws work or not,” LaPierre said. They just want get more laws to get more control over people. But the NRA, the NRA does care.”
Despite the difference in agendas being pushed by the NRA and the President, Trump plays down any such disunity on Twitter. He claims that he is still on the NRA’s side, and pays lip service to their cause despite his new gun control push.
“What many people don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing,” Trump said in a Tweet earlier today.
It remains to be seen whether Trump will address his gun control policies during tomorrow’s speech, which is scheduled for 10:05am tomorrow in the Potomac Ballroom at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. The Liberty Conservative will run a followup on this story and whether Trump addressed gun control during his speech tomorrow morning.
