Two Military Horses in Serious Condition After Running Loose Through Streets of London
In a rare and chaotic incident, two military horses from the Household Cavalry were left in serious condition after bolting through the streets of central London during morning rush hour. The horses, named Vida, Trojan, and Tennyson, were training for an upcoming military parade when they were spooked by construction noise, causing them to gallop miles through the city.
The chaotic scene unfolded as the horses had near misses with cyclists and motorbike riders, causing panic among commuters. Three soldiers who were thrown from their horses during the incident were hospitalized with injuries but are expected to recover.
The fate of the two horses with the worst injuries remains uncertain as they are undergoing treatment at an equine hospital. The other horses involved in the incident were corralled at Limehouse and taken back to their barracks safely.
Defense minister James Cartlidge described the incident as exceptionally rare, highlighting the regiment’s annual inspection at Hyde Park as a demonstration of their readiness for summer pageantry, including Trooping the Color and state visits.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges faced by the Household Cavalry in their training and preparation for ceremonial duties. It also raises questions about the impact of urban development and noise pollution on military animals and their behavior.
As the horses receive treatment and the soldiers recuperate from their injuries, the Household Cavalry will continue to ensure the safety and well-being of their animals while fulfilling their duty to protect and serve the nation.
