Former aide to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, Brittany Commisso, is taking legal action against him, claiming “pervasive abusive conduct” under New York’s Adult Survivors Act. Commisso alleges that Cuomo subjected her to continuous sexual harassment and retaliated against her when she rebuffed his advances and reported his behavior.
These accusations have been circulating since 2020 when Ms. Commisso first came forward, but Cuomo has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In 2021, Commisso escalated the matter by filing a formal criminal complaint with the Albany County sheriff’s office. After conducting an investigation, charges were brought against Cuomo.
However, Albany County prosecutors ultimately decided against pursuing the case, stating that they were unable to meet the burden of proof required for a successful trial. Despite this setback, Commisso remains determined to seek justice.
On Tuesday, Ms. Commisso’s legal team filed court papers, signaling the start of a civil lawsuit against the governor. Following the filing of these papers, according to court rules, a formal complaint will be presented.
The lawsuit will shed further light on the allegations made against Cuomo and allow Commisso to present her case in a court of law. It represents a significant step in her pursuit of holding the governor accountable for his alleged actions.
The suit comes at a time when Cuomo’s political career is already marred by scandal, including multiple allegations of sexual misconduct from various women. The governor’s popularity has plummeted, leading to widespread calls for his resignation or impeachment.
As the proceedings move forward, it remains to be seen how the court will respond to Commisso’s claims. The case could have far-reaching implications not only for Cuomo but also for the broader #MeToo movement, as it continues to shine a spotlight on the persistent issue of workplace harassment and abuse of power.
For now, both sides will have their opportunity to present their arguments in a court of law, allowing the justice system to determine the validity of the allegations and provide a resolution to this high-profile case.
