New Research Shows AI-Powered Chatbots Can Improve Health Habits
New research published in npj Digital Medicine has suggested that chatbots powered by artificial intelligence (AI) can play a significant role in improving physical activity, diet, and sleep. Poor lifestyle choices, such as a sedentary lifestyle, an unhealthy diet, and a lack of sleep, have long been linked to various health problems. However, this study indicates that AI-driven chatbots could provide personalized responses to help users make healthier choices in their daily lives.
In order to arrive at this conclusion, the study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 trials involving a total of 3,567 participants. Specifically, these trials examined the impact of chatbots on physical activity, diet, and sleep. The findings revealed that chatbot interventions resulted in small-to-moderate improvements across these three areas.
For instance, participants who engaged with the chatbots were found to take an additional 735 steps per day on average. Moreover, these individuals also incorporated an extra serving of fruits and vegetables into their daily diet. It was also discovered that chatbots had a positive influence on sleep duration and quality, with users enjoying an extra 45 minutes of sleep each night.
Interestingly, text-based chatbots were found to be more effective than voice-based alternatives. The study emphasized that while the potential of chatbots in healthcare is promising, caution is necessary as the field of research is still relatively young. It must be acknowledged that further work is required to refine the design of chatbots, optimize their content, and develop personalized engagement strategies to maximize their effectiveness.
The researchers suggested that future studies should focus on larger sample sizes and longer-term follow-up studies to gain more comprehensive insights into the benefits of chatbot interventions. Furthermore, it is important to explore user engagement issues in order to ensure the long-term success and effectiveness of chatbot systems.
