Samsung’s latest marketing move involves targeting iPhone users and convincing them to consider switching to a folding phone. The tech giant has created a demo that allows iPhone users to experience a simulation of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This demo is available through Samsung’s “Try Galaxy” web app, which lets users try out the Galaxy user interface on their iPhones.
The app simulates One UI 5.1, Samsung’s skin on top of Android 13, and provides a brief navigation tutorial before users can explore the interface. Recently, the app has been updated to simulate the Galaxy Z Fold 5 by using two connected iPhones. By placing the iPhones side-by-side, users can experience a unified larger display that offers as big of a footprint as the actual Galaxy Z Fold.
Although the demo does not offer full functionality, users can get a glimpse of what it’s like to have an app stretched across two screens and try out dragging-and-dropping between two apps in a Split View multitasking UI. Some users, such as Romana Loyola from Macworld, were impressed by the demo’s capabilities but remained unconvinced that they needed a folding iPhone.
In fact, Loyola went the extra mile by taping the two iPhones together to create a makeshift hinge. However, she found this cumbersome and concluded that it was not a suitable replacement for a true folding phone. Despite individuals like Loyola not being fully convinced, the overall goal of the demo is to showcase the potential of a folding phone and encourage iPhone users to consider switching to Android or even purchasing a folding iPhone in the future.
Samsung’s attempt to entice iPhone users with a simulation of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a strategic move aimed at expanding their market share. By providing an opportunity for iPhone users to experience the benefits of a folding phone, Samsung hopes to sway them towards their products. This marketing tactic highlights the ongoing competition between Apple and Samsung, as both tech giants vie for consumer loyalty in the highly competitive smartphone industry.
