Two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist David Taylor shocked the wrestling world by failing to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Penn State product lost to fellow wrestler Aaron Brooks at the Olympic trials, ending his bid for a spot on Team USA.
Taylor, also known as the “Magic Man,” needed to win two of three bouts against Brooks but lost both matches. Meanwhile, Brooks, a 23-year-old who just wrapped up his collegiate career with a fourth consecutive NCAA title, secured his place on Team USA with the upset victory.
The U.S. trials system proved to be unforgiving, requiring even the most accomplished athletes like Taylor to earn their spot on the Olympic team. With only one athlete per country per weight class allowed to compete at the Games, the competition was fierce.
Brooks nearly didn’t make it to face Taylor, as he had to navigate through the challenge tournament before securing his spot in the final. The outcome was unexpected as Taylor and Iranian rival Hassan Yazdani were favored to face off in Paris with a gold medal at stake.
After the loss, Taylor did not pass through the mixed zone to field questions from reporters, leaving many to speculate about his future in wrestling. Despite his recent dominance in U.S. wrestling over the past five years, Taylor’s dreams of Olympic glory will have to wait for another chance.
