Title: Large-scale Surrender of Myanmar Army Battalion Signals Shift in Ethnic Armed Conflict
In a significant turn of events near the Chinese border, an entire battalion comprising 127 soldiers of the Myanmar army, along with 134 of their family members, surrendered to an alliance of ethnic armed groups. This marked the largest surrender of regular army forces since the armed conflict erupted in Myanmar earlier this year.
The surrender comes on the heels of the Three Brotherhood Alliance’s well-coordinated offensive against the military government, which has been facing a nationwide uprising led by the Peoples’ Defense Force. The alliance has claimed several victories, prompting the military government to admit losing control of three towns. These recent developments in Shan state have posed a significant challenge for the army.
For decades, ethnic armed groups in the alliance have been relentlessly fighting for greater autonomy. Exploiting the military’s vulnerability, surprise attacks by the Arakan Army in Rakhine state have further tested the government’s control.
Underlining the gravity of the situation, each soldier surrendering was awarded 1 million kyat ($480), while their family members received 100,000 kyat ($48). These incentives may have helped encourage the surrender and symbolize the alliance’s intent to accommodate and reintegrate them.
The alliance has now set its sights on capturing Laukkaing, a major city in the region associated with organized criminal enterprises, including cyberscam operations controlled by Chinese investors. Laukkaing’s criminal reputation has prompted the Chinese government to initiate a crackdown on such illicit activities. In response, the Three Brotherhood Alliance plans to launch an operation to seize Laukkaing after effectively surrounding the city.
This recent wave of surrenders is not an isolated incident in Shan state. Since October 31, over 200 soldiers and police have surrendered to the alliance. Similar surrendering incidents have also been reported in various other states and regions of Myanmar.
As the ethnic armed groups gain momentum, the military government faces an uphill battle in reclaiming control over rebel-held territories. The situation continues to evolve rapidly, with the alliance and the Peoples’ Defense Force posing unprecedented challenges to the central authority.
