Allstate Protection Plans recently conducted their annual device drop tests and the results were concerning for owners of expensive smartphones. The tests included popular models such as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, and Google Pixel Fold.
To simulate real-life situations, the devices were first dunked in water for 30 minutes and then dropped from a six-foot height onto a sidewalk. Surprisingly, despite their advertised water resistance ratings, all smartphones suffered damage from the drop tests.
In the front screen-down drop test, both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S23 Ultra shattered on their very first drop. Even the Z Fold5 and Google Pixel Fold, which withstood two screen-down drops, had visible frame damage and screen dents.
When dropped on their closed outer displays, both the Z Fold5 and Google Pixel Fold also shattered under the impact. It seems that the latest glass upgrades by Apple for the iPhone 15 Pro Max did not lead to significant improvements in drop durability.
Not only were the screens affected, but camera functionality was also compromised due to damage to the camera glass on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This raises concerns for smartphone users who rely heavily on their devices for capturing important moments.
It is important to note that drop tests are variable and may not accurately reflect real-world results. The conditions in which a smartphone is dropped may differ from the controlled environment of these tests.
However, the results do highlight the need for users to take precautions to protect their expensive devices. It is recommended to use a protective case or consider purchasing AppleCare+ or other device protection plans that offer coverage against accidental damage.
In conclusion, Allstate Protection Plans’ annual device drop tests have shown that even expensive smartphones, including the highly anticipated iPhone 15 Pro Max, are susceptible to damage. While caution should be taken with the results of these tests, it is clear that device owners should take steps to protect their investments.
