United Nations Mission Arrives in Nagorno-Karabakh After 30 Years
In a significant development, a United Nations (UN) mission has made its way to the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, marking the first time in approximately three decades that the global body has gained access to the area. Led by a senior UN aid official, the mission aims to assess the situation on the ground after a recent Azerbaijani military offensive triggered a mass exodus of ethnic Armenians from the region.
Amid mounting concerns about the welfare of civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia has appealed to the International Court of Justice to demand that Azerbaijan withdraw its troops from civilian establishments in the disputed territory. Furthermore, Armenia has called for the UN to be granted access to the region to address the urgent humanitarian needs of the population.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 100,000 ethnic Armenians have made the perilous journey from Nagorno-Karabakh to neighboring Armenia in less than a week. Recognizing the pressing need for assistance, the WHO is dispatching experts in fields such as mental health, burns management, essential health services, and emergency coordination to provide aid.
Tragically, the departure of Armenian families from Nagorno-Karabakh has been marred by a devastating fuel depot explosion that claimed the lives of at least 170 people. This further underscores the urgency of resolving the crisis and ensuring the safe evacuation of those seeking to leave the region.
Despite the challenges, the Armenian government has expressed optimism that the process of relocating individuals wishing to leave Nagorno-Karabakh is nearing completion. Russiaโs RIA news agency has been closely monitoring and reporting on the progress of these relocation efforts.
It is worth noting that the International Court of Justice has previously ruled that Azerbaijan must guarantee unhindered movement through the Lachin corridor, allowing people to commute to and from Nagorno-Karabakh freely. This ruling reinforces the importance of ensuring the safe passage of individuals affected by the conflict.
As the UN mission commences its work in Nagorno-Karabakh, the global community eagerly awaits updates on the situation and hopes for a resolution that safeguards the well-being of all civilians caught in the midst of this regional turmoil.
